Startup product development
Empathise, ideate, prototype, and validate. Get it done in just 5 days.
Deep dive into the structure of a design sprint.
Design sprints start with corporate teams of up to 7 people per project who are up for a stimulating, collaborative, fast-paced, high-energy innovation cycle. We challenge participants to get out of their daily comfort zones to where the magic happens and drive innovation forward. This requires participants from different organizational backgrounds and business units to develop creative thinking, help solve problems, and voice their opinions to constructively challenge the group.
Here’s the plan for a classic 5-day design sprint. We also run shorter 3-day design sprints.
Day 1: Empathise and map out the problem
The first day is all about picking a target so you can start with the end goal in mind.
- Define your long-term goal
- Map out your challenge and problem
- Leverage existing knowledge
- Customer problem interviews
- Define How-Might-We statements
Day 2: Empathise and map out the problem
The second day you’ll start coming up with new ideas and solutions that will solve your customers’ problems. Try to take inspiration from different industries and implement that in your challenge.
- Customer journey mapping
- Define the right problem to solve
- Lightning demos of existing solutions
- Ideation creative rounds
(analogy thinking, brainwriting, trends and drivers, triggers, opposite thinking, analogy cards, and more)
Day 3: Concept development and selection
On the third day, you will make a few decisions. Day 3 is about shortlisting your ideas and choosing the best ones to take forward.
- Critique, refine and cluster ideas
- Idea selection process
- Converge best ideas, features, and functionalities
(using strategies including innovation battlefield and assumption mapper) - Concept card development
- Storyboard prototype
Day 4: Prototype development
The fourth day is about making your ideas tangible in the fastest, cheapest, and easiest way possible. It’s not about making a prototype that looks like your end product. It’s about testing the key values of your ideas in the quickest way.
- Prototype tools palette and training
- Define team prototyping roles
- Rapid prototyping session
- Minimal viable product testing
- Problem interview training and preparation
- Interview test run with the prototype
Day 5: Test and Validation
On the last day of the sprint program, you’ll test your prototypes with 5 to 10 end users. Validate the assumptions you’ve made over the course of the week and gain input and feedback to iterate your product.
- 5x customer interviews
- Real-time interview insight gathering by the team
- Team analysis of interview insights
- Reflect on insights in relation to original sprint questions
- Validate hypotheses and assumptions
- Plan next steps and move on

16 Cognitive Bias poster
What is this for?
The purpose of this poster is to discuss several key cognitive biases and their effects on decision making within strategic innovation management as well as how to minimise their effects so that team members can contribute optimally to the fuzzy innovation process.
They are essential in understanding and managing appropriately to ensure your innovation outputs are most suitable to your challenges and problems identified, rather than being decided upon by instantaneous emotional instinct without objective reflection.
